And a 2wd Dodge Nitro is useless off road, My K-car was better. F ord Tempo that doesn’t run is better, walking is better. This Vehicle, in an offroad sense, is tits on a phone pole, Happytime murders useless. I’m not talking going mudding, I’m talking barely going forward on wet gravel, having to shoot the ditch to get back on the road I was turning around on, defeated by wet grass. Good job Dodge.
Rant over.

But it looks like a rugged SUV for my active lifestyle!

It’s really all about the tires...

I hate to do it, but I gotta call BS. What tires are you using? I would imagine it all comes down to that. Not the vehicle itself. I mean, it shouldn’t be any worse than a 2WD pickup in muddy conditions. I would think if you had some aggressive treaded tires, it would fair much better. I’ve driven my share of RWD vehicles with and without the proper tire for the situation, and in my experience, the tires make all the difference.
Also, as you stated the FWD cars would be better given the same tire choice just due to the weight bias over the driven wheels.
I get it though, sometimes you just gotta vent. It does look pretty all covered in mud.

Sounds like you had a good time then?

It’s mainly about the overly active traction control, a 2wd suv is basically a station wagon, and all my wagons have done better than this.

Another vote for tires. I got stuck in wet grass twice in my 4x4 Grand Cherokee with the car tires it used to have on it.

Technically I was on-road the whole time, only left the road to get back on the road. Have no intention to go mudding.

Somehow I didn’t know these were RWD. I always assumed they were FWD. Also didn’t know you could get it with a stick. The things you learn...

I bought it for the stick, thought I’d learn to love the rest. Unflinchingly reliable, appalling gas mileage. Does it’s job otherwise.

Seems to me more of a tire issue than vehicle issue.
Judging by the pic it looks like it has almost shot all seasons on it.

I mean, in fairness it sounds like all your wagons were FWD, which would pull you out better.
I gotta agree with Tsuter and say it’s time for a tire upgrade if this is a frequent occurrence .
Man I hate over-active traction control. Thankfully my Milan is a TCS off button on the dash and I can slap it without even looking. Sometimes you need to be allowed to just give it more power.

Weird, the Nitro was supposed to be a really good car otherwise.

Does it nickel and dime you with stupid, non-critical crap breaking? That was always my experience with Dodge. Dead nuts reliable drivetrains, but poor fuel economy and stupid crap all the time like door latches, cracking dashes, intermitent radio, etc. Oh, all that and rust.
Still, I would consider a Nitro as a beater truck if/when I need one. I love that it’s just a big ass box with lots of space. Curious, does the front seat fold flat?

It’s a Liberty with a crosshair grille, more or less.

I ended up looking at the wikipedia and saw that they are on the same platform. I remember liking the look of these when they came out, but I never seriously investigated them, or the Liberty (which I’m decidedly not as into). B oth were pretty far outside of my wheelhouse. But it’s a good factoid to file away for later.

Is nobody freaking out over the fact it could be optioned for RWD and a stick?!

Plastic roof rails cracked, left on side of road, underbody heat shield fell off “oh good it’s not my u joints” removed and forgotten. other than that I’ve had to replace the window spritzers and rear wiper arm. plastic crap. But 100% does it’s job.

Probably the case. and in the nitro’s defense I did not get stuck. The rears might get replaced with something knobbly.

It’s actually a surprisingly good car. Thirsty, but this is really my first complaint.
